Labour Party Elects Nenadi Usman National Chair at Historic Umuahia Convention
The Labour Party has elected Nenadi Usman as its substantive National Chairman during the party’s 2026 National Elective Convention held in Umuahia.
Usman, who previously served as Caretaker National Chairman, emerged alongside other members of the National Working Committee during Tuesday’s convention, where delegates adopted a consensus and affirmation process to usher in the new leadership.
Also elected were Hon. Iheanacho Obioma as National Secretary and Hilda Dokubo as National Women Leader.
Speaking at the convention, Alex Otti praised the Chairman of the National Congress and Convention Committee, Hon. Ginger Onwusibe, and the Secretary, Salisu Nuhu Muhammad, for conducting what he described as a credible and transparent exercise.
Otti described Usman as a woman of integrity and congratulated the newly elected National Working Committee, urging them to brace for the tasks ahead.
“I am pleased that we have elected individuals who understand what is expected of them, with representation drawn from across the country,” he said.
The governor also charged the new leadership to prioritise reconciliation and inclusiveness within the party.
“Ensure that nobody is left behind. Embark on a reconciliation drive, engage our members and reassure them that they are valued. Politics is a game of numbers; we need as many people as possible,” he stated.
He further urged the leadership to deliver rancour-free primary elections ahead of campaigns and the general election.
In her acceptance speech, Usman thanked delegates for the confidence reposed in her and pledged not to disappoint them. She also appreciated Governor Otti for giving her the opportunity to serve in a role often regarded as male-dominated in Nigeria.
“We shall do everything possible to grow the party and make you proud. I ask for your maximum cooperation, as building a political party is not the task of an individual,” she said.
