Otti Approves Aba NOUN Study Centre, Urges Nigerians to Embrace Digital Learning
Governor of Abia State, Alex Otti, has called on Nigerians to embrace digital and distance education, describing it as the future of learning in a rapidly evolving global landscape.
The Governor made the call while receiving a delegation from the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN), led by its Vice-Chancellor, Uduma Orji Uduma, at the Government House.
Otti commended NOUN for pioneering virtual learning in Nigeria long before it became a global norm, noting that advancements in technology have made remote interaction and education indispensable.
“Today, meetings are held across continents through digital platforms. Open, distance, and virtual learning have become the order of the day. We have no choice but to embrace it,” the Governor stated.
In a major boost for education in the state, Otti approved the establishment of a NOUN study centre in Aba, describing the move as necessary and timely. He directed the General Manager of the Greater Aba Development Authority (GADA) to identify a suitable temporary location pending the development of a permanent site.
The Governor also tasked the Commissioner for Tertiary Education to conduct a feasibility study on upgrading the existing Umuahia study centre, in line with requests from the university’s management.
Reaffirming his administration’s commitment to education, Otti revealed that about 20 percent of the state’s annual budget has consistently been allocated to the sector over the past three years. He added that three smart schools would soon be commissioned as part of ongoing reforms.
Earlier, Vice-Chancellor Uduma said the visit was to seek partnership with the state government for the establishment of a study centre in Aba and the upgrade of the Umuahia facility. He described open and distance learning as critical to expanding access to education in the 21st century.
Uduma noted that NOUN currently operates over 120 study centres nationwide, with only eight in the South-East, stressing the need to expand access in the region.
He also commended the Governor’s development strides, stating that his administration’s people-oriented projects have earned widespread recognition across the country.
The meeting was attended by the Commissioner for Tertiary Education, Professor Uche Eme, alongside other top government officials.
