Senator Emma Nwaka has commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu “for his uncommon visit to the Nigerian troops in their trenches in Katsina to bolster their morale in the arduous task they face in combating insurgency, banditry, and terrorism in the northern parts of Nigeria.”
Senator Nwaka, in a statement made available to News Express on Saturday evening, May 3, 2025, noted that “Nigerians are pleased to see their President know how they feel.”
He said that the President’s visit leaves him in no doubt that “the Tinubu Administration is primed to tackle the burgeoning state of insecurity across the length and breadth of Nigeria with the lethality the situation demands.”
Nwaka called on the armed forces to reciprocate the increased government security exposure in terms of enhanced funding and provision of modern equipment by making sure that no inch of Nigerian territory is under the occupation of insurgents.
He reminded them that that is the primary responsibility of the armed forces: to safeguard the territorial integrity of Nigeria.
The Abia political heavyweight expressed dismay with “the so-called de-radicalisation programme being pursued by the armed forces.” He said it is counterproductive, pointing out that “experience has shown that the de-radicalised bandits quickly return to their wicked ways.”
Nwaka advised that something has to be done urgently to shorten the length of time our troops spend in one go at the war front to enhance efficiency and stay in line with global best practices.
The seasoned lawyer and veteran politician is of the view that the Nigeria Police Force needs to be better equipped to reduce the responsibility the Armed Forces bear in tackling internal security challenges. He said it was about time the establishment of a National Guard, which the Ibrahim Babangida administration had a go at was revisited to relieve the armed forces from being encumbered with internal security issues.
Senator Nwaka doffed his hat to President Tinubu for moving around the country to feel the pulse and heartbeats of Nigerians with a view to finding solutions to the myriad of problems confronting them. He said that this is a welcome development.
