ADC Picks Akobundu as Consensus Candidate for Abia Central Senatorial Seat
The Abia State chapter of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) has elected Senator Austin Okwudiri Akobundu as its consensus candidate for the Abia Central Senatorial District seat ahead of the National Assembly election.
Senator Akobundu emerged during the ADC Abia Central Senatorial District primaries held on Thursday at the Kolping Society, following a unanimous affirmation by party stakeholders and delegates across the six local government areas in the zone.
Declaring the result, Chairman of the Electoral Committee, Onyebuchi Chukwu, announced that a total of 653 votes were collated from the six LGAs, confirming Akobundu as the party’s consensus candidate.
His emergence followed a motion moved by the ADC South-East National Assistant Youth Leader, Paul Ogechi Nwagbala, seeking the affirmation and adoption of Senator Akobundu as the sole candidate of the party for the Abia Central Senatorial District seat. The motion was seconded by Obinna Nwaogwugwu.
Results collated under the supervision of INEC officials showed that Isiala Ngwa South recorded 144 votes, Isiala Ngwa North 102 votes, Umuahia South 106 votes, Umuahia North 132 votes, Osisioma 103 votes, while Ikwuano delivered 106 votes.
INEC officials who monitored the exercise included Okamene Kelechi, Mgbeahuruike Favour, Emefu Glory, Ogbuehi Ifeoma, Ariwodo Mariam, Augustine Chinedu, Okereke Chinwe, Onuoha Ahamotu, and Chioma Utokandu.
Speaking after his emergence, Senator Akobundu thanked God and party members for the confidence reposed in him, describing the process as peaceful, transparent, and driven by unity among party faithful.
“I am overwhelmed by the outpouring of support. What we witnessed from the wards was collective enthusiasm, which led to the smooth conduct of the process. Honourable members were elected unopposed peacefully and unanimously under the party, and it was through unity and peace that this was achieved,” he stated.
The former senator also commended party leaders and officials involved in the conduct and collation of results for ensuring a seamless exercise across the House of Assembly, House of Representatives, and Senatorial District primaries.
He further appreciated security agencies for maintaining peace and order throughout the exercise.
