Abia APC Moves Against Kalu, Nkwonta Over Alleged Anti-Party Utterances

The Abia State chapter of the All Progressives Congress, APC, has condemned what it described as “unstatesmanlike, irresponsible and anti-party” statements attributed to former Abia State Governor and Senator representing Abia North, Orji Uzor Kalu, and the member representing Ukwa East/Ukwa West Federal Constituency, Hon. Chris Nkwonta.

The party’s State Working Committee, SWC, took the position at its meeting held on Monday, August 10, 2026, following reports of public comments by the two prominent APC members concerning the 2027 Abia governorship election.

In a communiqué unanimously adopted and signed by the 17 members of the Abia APC State Working Committee (SWC) present at the meeting, led by the State Chairman, Hon. Chijioke Chukwu, the party unanimously condemned the statements and actions attributed to Kalu and Nkwonta, describing them as capable of undermining the unity, cohesion and electoral prospects of the party in the state.

The SWC expressed particular concern that the alleged comments came at a time when the APC was mobilising members and supporters across the 184 wards of the state ahead of the 2027 elections.

The committee alleged that Senator Kalu, during an interview on a national television station, declared that Governor Alex Otti of the Labour Party would win the 2027 governorship election.

Similarly, the APC accused Hon. Nkwonta of publicly stating, in the presence of the First Lady of Nigeria, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, that he would vote for Governor Otti in the forthcoming governorship election.

The SWC said such declarations by individuals regarded as leaders and prominent members of the APC amounted to internal sabotage and anti-party conduct capable of weakening the party’s electoral machinery and demoralising its supporters.

The Abia APC maintained that no member, regardless of political status, influence or past contributions, was above the constitution of the party.

It consequently held that the alleged conduct of Kalu and Nkwonta constituted a breach of Article 21.2(11) of the APC Constitution, 2022, which provides for disciplinary action against members whose conduct is considered inimical to the party or amounts to indiscipline and disloyalty.

14-Day Ultimatum
As part of its resolutions, the SWC called on Kalu and Nkwonta to tender an unreserved public apology to the APC leadership, members and supporters in Abia State.
The committee said the apology must demonstrate their commitment to the party, its constitution, leadership and collective decision to support its candidates in the 2027 general elections, particularly its governorship candidate.

It said failure to comply would compel the party to constitute a disciplinary committee to investigate the circumstances surrounding their statements and actions and make appropriate recommendations.

The party further warned that, if found liable, the two politicians could face disciplinary measures prescribed by the APC Constitution and other applicable regulations.

It also resolved to withdraw political support and privileges from either individual if their conduct was established to be inimical to the party’s interests ahead of the 2027 elections.

The Abia APC declared that the party remained committed to strengthening its structures, supporting its candidates and working towards winning the 2027 governorship election as well as federal and state legislative seats in the state.

The SWC stressed that the APC was bigger than any individual, irrespective of political stature, and urged members to remain calm, united and focused as preparations for the 2027 elections intensify.
