BREAKING: Kidnapped Orthopaedic Surgeon, Dr. Uche Aguocha, Regains Freedom After 9 Days in Captivity
The Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), Abia State Branch, has announced the release of renowned Orthopaedic Surgeon and former State Chairman of the association, Dr. Uche Bonaventure Aguocha, who was abducted on May 24, 2026.
In a statement issued in Umuahia on Tuesday, the association disclosed that Dr. Aguocha regained his freedom on June 2 after spending nine days in captivity.
The NMA expressed gratitude to God for preserving the doctor’s life and ensuring his safe return to his family, colleagues, and patients.
The association also commended the governments of Abia and Imo states, led by Governors Alex Otti and Hope Uzodimma respectively, as well as the Department of State Services (DSS), the Nigeria Police Force, and other security agencies for their efforts in securing his release.
It further appreciated members of the public, healthcare workers, and the media for their prayers, support, and solidarity throughout the period of his captivity.
Despite celebrating Dr. Aguocha’s release, the NMA strongly condemned the recurring abduction of medical professionals, warning that the growing trend poses a serious threat to healthcare delivery and the safety of healthcare workers.
The association noted that the continued targeting of doctors, including unresolved cases such as the kidnap of Prof. Iweha in 2020, has negatively affected the morale of health professionals working under difficult conditions.
NMA Abia therefore called on both the Federal and State Governments to strengthen security around healthcare facilities and personnel, while demanding a thorough investigation into the incident and the prosecution of those responsible.
According to the association, “As a result of his successful release from captivity unharmed, and per the directive of the great Congress of the Nigerian Medical Association Abia State branch, the total and indefinite strike action is hereby suspended“.
The association reaffirmed its commitment to providing quality healthcare services and pledged continued engagement with government and security agencies to ensure a safer working environment for doctors across the state.
It also wished Dr. Aguocha a speedy recovery from the physical and psychological trauma resulting from the ordeal.
