Residents of Umuobasi street, in Umuahia were thrown into panic and frustration after two major electricity poles suddenly collapsed, dragging heavy power cables across the street and cutting off access to homes and businesses.

The incident, which occurred late Tuesday night after a heavy rain fall without warning, has left the once-busy road partially blocked and dangerously exposed. Thick electric wires now stretch across the asphalt, some lying directly on the ground, sparking fears of electrocution and possible fire outbreaks.

Eyewitnesses say the poles had shown signs of weakness for months, leaning dangerously before it finally gave way. “We have been complaining about this poles,” one resident lamented. “Nobody listened. Now see what has happened—it’s a disaster waiting to claim lives.”

Parents are particularly worried as children who normally play around the area are now at risk. Movement has become restricted, with vehicles forced to turn back and pedestrians navigating cautiously around the fallen structure.

Beyond the physical obstruction, the collapse has plunged the area into darkness, disrupting businesses and daily activities. Small shop owners report losses, while residents struggle without electricity for basic needs.

“This is not just about power outage,” another resident stressed. “This is about safety. Anyone can step on these cables. We need urgent intervention before something terrible happens.”

The neighborhood is now calling on relevant authorities and power distribution agencies to act swiftly—repair the damaged infrastructure, restore electricity, and most importantly, prevent a looming tragedy.

Until then, the fallen pole remains a silent threat—one that residents hope will not turn into a story of regrets.
