Governor Alex Otti has taken a significant step toward positioning Abia State as a major economic and maritime hub with the commencement of a feasibility study for the proposed Azumini Seaport in partnership with China Harbour Engineering Company (CHEC).

The proposed Azumini Seaport is envisioned as a strategic infrastructure project that will transform Abia into a gateway economy for the South-East by providing direct maritime access for Aba’s thriving industrial cluster and the wider region.

When completed, the port is expected to reduce cargo transportation costs for manufacturers, ease congestion at the Lagos ports, and establish a new logistics corridor linking Abia to international trade routes through the Imo/Azumini Blue River.

The ongoing feasibility study will assess the project’s technical, economic, environmental, and social viability. It will also examine critical components such as dredging requirements, port design, road and rail connectivity, as well as private-sector financing models necessary for the project’s execution.

The initiative aligns with Governor Otti’s “Rebuild Abia” agenda, which prioritizes infrastructure development as a catalyst for economic growth, job creation, enhanced export competitiveness, and sustainable revenue generation for the state.

Beyond its significance to Abia, the proposed Azumini Seaport has the potential to strengthen Nigeria’s maritime infrastructure by creating what could become a third major port corridor alongside Onne Port and the Ibom Deep Sea Port.

Upon completion of the feasibility study, the next phase will determine the project’s implementation timeline, investment structure, and the necessary federal approvals required for its development.

The information was contained in a statement signed by Chief Press Secretary to the Governor of Abia State, Ctz. Ukoha Njoku Ukoha.
