2027: Performance, Not Party, Will Decide Abia Central Race — Onuigbo
A former member of the House of Representatives, Sam Onuigbo, has declared that the outcome of the 2027 Abia Central senatorial election will be driven by candidates’ track records rather than party affiliations.
Speaking in Abuja on Tuesday, Onuigbo expressed confidence in the political awareness of voters in the district, noting that the electorate is sophisticated enough to assess candidates based on performance and not merely party loyalty.
Addressing concerns about contesting under the platform of the All Progressives Congress in a state currently governed by the Labour Party, the former lawmaker emphasized that the focus should remain on competence and the ability to deliver.
He described Abia Central as a hub of intellectual and industrial excellence, highlighting its status as home to the state capital, the Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike, and the industrial area of Osisioma. According to him, the district’s history of producing notable figures underscores the discerning nature of its electorate.
Onuigbo expressed optimism that his record in office would work in his favour. He argued that nearly 27 years of uninterrupted democracy in Nigeria has matured the electorate, enabling voters to critically evaluate candidates based on verifiable achievements.
The former federal lawmaker, who represented Ikwuano/Umuahia North/South Federal Constituency for two terms, cited several projects he facilitated, including the construction of the first Federal Secretariat in Abia, rehabilitation of the Umuahia–Ikwuano Road, and the restoration of delisted science programmes at the university.
He also highlighted his contributions to erosion control, education, water and electricity projects, as well as scholarship and empowerment initiatives, describing them as evidence of his capacity to deliver at a higher level.
Onuigbo maintained that voters should be able to distinguish between credible representatives and those who fail to meet expectations, insisting that his performance record would make that distinction clear.
He further noted that the “Renewed Hope Agenda” of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu provides a strong foundation for candidates of the APC to campaign on tangible achievements.
