Otti Lights Torch of Unity, Flags Off Abia Tertiary Institutions Sports Fiesta
Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti, has flagged off the 2026 Abia Tertiary Institutions Sports Festival with the ceremonial lighting of the Torch of Unity, signalling the commencement of inter-tertiary sports competitions across the state.
The ceremony took place yesterday, October 19, at the Michael Okpara Auditorium, Government House, Umuahia, shortly after the weekly State Executive Council meeting.
Governor Otti, while receiving the torch, urged participating institutions to abide by the rules of the games and reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to sports development.
He said the festival would bring together students from public and private, federal and state-owned tertiary institutions in Abia to promote unity, healthy competition, sportsmanship and youth development.
The Governor added that the Torch of Unity would traverse all participating institutions to spread the message of togetherness and encourage greater participation in sports.
These were contained in a statement made available to newsmen by the Chairman of the Media Sub-Committee of the Abia State Tertiary Education Sports Fiesta 2026, Ferdinand Ekeoma.
Presenting the torch earlier, the Commissioner for Tertiary Education, Professor Uche Eme Uche, expressed delight that the festival had become a reality after months of planning that began in January.
She recalled that the maiden edition, held last year, was a huge success, describing Abia as a pacesetter in organising a sports fiesta exclusively for tertiary institutions.
Professor Uche disclosed that the initiative had attracted the attention of the Forum of Commissioners for Tertiary Education, with commissioners from other states expressing interest in understudying how the programme was conceived and funded.
She attributed the success of the initiative to Governor Otti’s commitment to education and sports development.
The Commissioner explained that the festival represented a paradigm shift from treating sports as a mere extracurricular activity to using it as a deliberate strategy to instil discipline, discover talents, encourage social interaction and promote collaboration among tertiary institutions.
She also commended the Governor for ensuring that private institutions participated alongside public institutions and for providing grants to support their participation.
According to her, the inclusive approach has provided a level playing field for institutions that previously lacked opportunities to participate in organised sporting events.
Professor Uche assured the Governor of the participating institutions’ commitment to the objectives of the initiative, expressing confidence that the festival would help students discover and develop their sporting talents.
Also speaking, the Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development, Sir Nwaobilor Ananaba, thanked Governor Otti for his exemplary leadership and support for sports development.
He described the Torch of Unity as a symbol of unity, strength, togetherness and youth empowerment, noting that the festival would provide a platform for talented athletes to emerge and represent Abia State in state and national competitions.
Sir Ananaba expressed optimism that the championship would identify promising athletes capable of representing the state at higher levels, while strengthening relationships among students from different institutions.
He added that the festival would encourage young people to embrace sports as a vehicle for personal development and positive engagement.
In his contribution, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Tertiary Education, Dr. Emeka Enyeazu, thanked Governor Otti for approving the festival, describing it as an impactful initiative that had attracted attention beyond Abia State, with other states seeking to emulate it.
Dr. Enyeazu disclosed that many institutions had registered for the festival and expressed optimism that the event would generate wider publicity for Abia and further establish the state as a leader in innovative educational and sporting programmes.
The statement noted that the 2026 Abia Tertiary Institutions Sports Festival goes beyond sporting competitions, describing it as a strategic investment in youth development and a key component of Governor Otti’s holistic education reform.
It identified the objectives of the programme as promoting unity and social cohesion among students from diverse backgrounds; discovering and nurturing talents for future national and international competitions; enhancing physical fitness, mental alertness, teamwork and discipline; strengthening cooperation and healthy rivalry among tertiary institutions; and driving economic and social engagement by positioning Abia as a hub for educational innovation and sports tourism.
The festival, the statement added, forms part of the state government’s broader agenda to promote youth engagement, encourage sporting excellence and build a productive, united and disciplined next generation.
Top government officials were present at the event.
