The Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, Abia State Chapter, has cautioned politicians in the state against engaging in politics of bitterness, hate speech, and divisive campaigns as political activities begin to gather momentum ahead of future elections.

Addressing journalists during a press conference, the group said it was concerned about the rising level of hostile rhetoric, insults, smear campaigns, and inflammatory exchanges dominating Abia’s political space, particularly on social media.

In a statement signed by Godwin Adindu, Publicity Secretary, and Chief Obinna Ibe, Assistant Publicity Secretary, Ohanaeze described itself as the apex global socio-cultural organization of the Igbo people, committed to the advancement, protection, and defense of Ndigbo worldwide. It noted that beyond promoting Igbo culture and identity, the body remains deeply interested in good governance, security, peace, and socio-economic progress across Igbo land.

The organization said its intervention became necessary due to what it called a growing “crossfire of verbal brickbats” among political actors in Abia State.

According to the group, the trend of insults, mudslinging, blackmail, and profane attacks could escalate into political thuggery and crisis if not urgently checked.

“Ohanaeze cannot keep silent in the face of bitter politics that can degenerate into chaos and civil unrest,” the statement said.

The group warned against inflammatory comments, incitement, and any conduct capable of generating tension within the state, stressing that politics should be about development and not destruction.

It called on politicians, supporters, and the general public to exercise restraint, responsibility, and decorum in their utterances and actions.

“We are all Abians, united by our common humanity and common ancestry. We appeal to our politicians to conduct themselves with restraint and circumspection and desist from toxic politics,” the group stated.
