The Abia State chapter of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) has directed members of its State Working Committee (SWC), as well as those at the local government and ward levels, who intend to contest elective positions to resign their offices on or before April 21, in compliance with electoral guidelines.

The decision was reached at an expanded meeting of the party’s SWC and was ratified by the executive members under the leadership of the State Chairman, Ambassador Sunday Onukwubiri, who subjected the resolution to a voice vote.

Addressing journalists after the meeting, the State Publicity Secretary, Chukwuemeka Nwokoro, said the directive was aimed at promoting transparency, fairness, and internal discipline within the party. He explained that asking aspiring candidates to step down from party positions early would give them sufficient time to pursue their ambitions without conflict of interest.

Nwokoro who stated that APGA in Abia State was giving a 48hour window for interested members to tender their resignation starting April 16th, added that the move is in line with provisions of Nigeria’s Electoral Act, which empowers the Independent National Electoral Commission to set timelines for political parties to conduct primaries and submit candidates’ lists ahead of general elections.
