Former federal lawmaker and President of GLOBE Legislators International, Rt. Hon. Sam Onuigbo, has expressed appreciation to the Solar Energy Society of Nigeria (SESN) for conferring on him its prestigious Fellowship in recognition of his contributions to climate change advocacy and action.

Onuigbo conveyed his appreciation in a letter addressed to the President of SESN, Dr. Sunny Akpoyibo, following the conferment of the Fellowship of the Solar Energy Society of Nigeria, FSESN, at the 43rd National Solar Energy Forum and Conference, NASEF 2026.

The former lawmaker particularly acknowledged the Society’s recognition of his role in sponsoring Nigeria’s Climate Change Act 2021, which established a legal and institutional framework for climate governance in the country.

He noted that the legislation continues to provide a foundation for climate action across various sectors of the Nigerian economy, supporting climate resilience, low-carbon development and Nigeria’s transition towards net-zero emissions.

Onuigbo also highlighted the importance of clean and renewable energy, particularly solar power, in achieving the objectives of the Climate Change Act and addressing Nigeria’s energy challenges.

He described the Fellowship as both a recognition of his past contributions and a call to greater responsibility, pledging to deepen his engagement with the Society.

The GLOBE Legislators International President further expressed his readiness to support initiatives aimed at expanding solar energy adoption, strengthening climate governance and unlocking the environmental, economic and social benefits of the clean energy transition.

Onuigbo sponsored Nigeria’s Climate Change Act 2021 during his tenure in the House of Representatives, where he represented Ikwuano/Umuahia North/Umuahia South Federal Constituency of Abia State.
