Abia to commence payment of Minimum wage from October

Abia state government is to commence the payment of a new minimum wage from the month of October 2024.

This is coming on the heels of the clamour by civil servants for the state government to commence payment of the new minimum wage.

This was disclosed to newsmen at government house by Abia state commissioner for information Prince Okey Kanu after the conclusion of the state executive council meeting.

Kanu stated the payment, “will cut across all categories of workers.”

The Commissioner stated that the state government is to construct seventeen new court halls across the seventeen local governments of the state. He added that the ground breaking ceremony which will come up in two weeks time, is aimed at improving the administration of justice in Abia.

The Information Commissioner said the flag off ceremony for the construction of a 19.1 kilometres pilot road under the Rural Access Maintenance Project – RAMP at Isialangwa South will take place on the 2nd of October. The road will cut across Isialangwa South and Obingwa local governments reaching several communities when completed.

He went further to say that the Ministry of Health will hold a free medical outreach at the SDG multipurpose hospital in Ugwunagbo on Wednesday 25th of September.

Kanu stated that the enrolment of women, children and the elderly into the basic plan of Abia state health insurance scheme will also take place at the free medical outreach to be hosted by wife of the Governor Mrs. Priscilla Otti.

The commissioner also told newsmen that the state Governor Dr. Alex Otti alongside members of the state executive council will host the Abia contingent to the recently concluded Paralympic games in Paris, France. Two athletes from Abia Miss Onyinyechi Mark and Miss Esther Nwogu who represented the country at the games won a Gold and silver medals respectively in weightlifting.
