Abia’s Development Model Draws Global Attention as Otti Hosts Nobel Prize Winner

Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti, has declared that governments must prioritise policies that deliver real development rather than pursue economic growth figures that fail to improve citizens’ lives.

Governor Otti made the assertion while receiving the 2024 Nobel Laureate in Economics, Prof. James A. Robinson, and a delegation of renowned academics from the United States at the Government House, Umuahia.

Governor Otti said the era of equating economic growth with development was over, stressing that Gross Domestic Product (GDP) figures alone could not measure the well-being of the people.

According to him, genuine development is reflected in policies that reduce poverty, create jobs and improve productivity.
“A country may record GDP growth of three or five per cent, but if population growth is higher, the economy is effectively shrinking because there are more people to cater for,” the Governor said.

The Governor, a First Class Economics graduate of the University of Port Harcourt, explained that his administration deliberately designs policies aimed at breaking the cycle of poverty by addressing its root causes, including unemployment and low productivity.

He added that creating an enabling environment for businesses must be complemented by investing in people, noting that capital injections without the human capacity to utilise them would produce little impact.

Governor Otti congratulated Prof. Robinson on winning the 2024 Nobel Prize in Economics and expressed the readiness of the Abia State Government to collaborate with him on research, policy development and knowledge exchange to strengthen the state’s development agenda.

Speaking earlier, Prof. Robinson, of the University of Chicago, said he was delighted to visit Abia and looked forward to engaging on Nigeria’s development challenges, Governor Otti’s reform initiatives and areas of possible collaboration.

Also speaking, Prof. Leander Heldring of Northwestern University said the prosperity of nations depends largely on the strength of their institutions and leadership, commending the developmental strides recorded under Governor Otti’s administration.

Prof. Chima Korie of Marquette University described Abia’s transformation as a source of pride to Nigerians in the Diaspora, expressing hope that other states would emulate the reforms taking place in the state.
Leader of the delegation and former Minister of Education and Health, Prof. Ihechukwu Madubuike, said the visit was aimed at fostering research collaboration, policy support and capacity building to deepen Abia’s development model.

Madubuike described Abia as a reference point for prudent economic management, noting that Governor Otti’s emphasis on fiscal discipline, transparency and value for money aligns with the development principles championed by Prof. Robinson.

President of the Abia State Leadership Academy (ASLA), Prof. Kenneth Kalu, said the Academy was established to nurture ethical, institution-driven leaders capable of delivering transformative leadership, adding that Prof. Robinson’s scholarly works had significantly shaped his academic career.

The meeting was attended by the Governor’s Chief of Staff, Pastor Caleb Ajagba, members of the State Executive Council and other senior government officials.
