Sam Onuigbo Calls for Unity, Strong Institutions as Nigeria Marks Democracy Day

Former federal lawmaker, Rt. Hon. Sir Sam Onuigbo, has urged Nigerians to recommit themselves to the ideals of democracy, saying the nation’s democratic freedom was earned through sacrifice, resilience and the determination of the people.

In his Democracy Day message, Onuigbo described June 12 as a symbol of the triumph of the people’s will over political uncertainty and paid tribute to those who fought for the restoration of democratic rule in Nigeria.

He stressed that democracy goes beyond periodic elections and must be reflected in justice, accountability, inclusion and the strengthening of national institutions to improve the lives of citizens.

Expressing confidence in Nigeria’s future, Onuigbo highlighted the ingenuity and resilience of Nigerians, particularly the youth, as strategic assets capable of positioning the country for greater leadership in Africa and the global community.

As Nigerians commemorate Democracy Day, we are called not merely to observe a national holiday, but to reflect upon one of the most defining chapters in our collective history. This day stands as a solemn reminder that democracy in Nigeria was neither donated nor inherited, it was earned through supreme sacrifice, sustained by resilience, and secured by the determination of millions who believed that the will of the people must remain greater than the ambitions of power.

The significance of June 12 extends beyond a date on our national calendar. It represents the triumph of democratic aspiration over political uncertainty. It recalls a period when the voice of the people sought expression and encountered resistance, yet ultimately prevailed through the enduring force of conviction.
