Otti’s Security Intervention: NSCDC Abia Commissions 3 Vehicles, Inaugurates Disciplinary, Safe School Committees

The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Abia State Command, has commissioned three refurbished Hilux operational vehicles and inaugurated its Senior and Junior Disciplinary Committees, Safe School Committee and Personnel Studying Approval Committee.

The twin events, held on Wednesday at the command’s headquarters in Umuahia, marked what the command described as further steps towards strengthening its operational capacity, discipline, personnel development and security responsibilities across the state.

Commissioning the vehicles, the State Commandant, Chukwuemeka Odimba, expressed appreciation to the Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, for what he described as his administration’s continued support for the corps.

Odimba, who spoke on behalf of the NSCDC Commandant-General, Ahmed Audi, said the governor had provided five operational vehicles to the command in less than six months, with a commitment to provide the remaining 10 vehicles as well as new ones.

He said the governor’s intervention reflected an understanding of the critical link between security and socio-economic development.

“Because he appreciates the importance of security. Without security, there would be no economic and social development,” Odimba said.

The Commandant listed other interventions by the state government, including provision of water, an observation point, more than 20 acres of land for the command’s permanent headquarters and sponsorship of personnel for capacity-building programmes.

He also disclosed that the command had been empowered to train other security personnel, including members of Homeland Security Abia, in technology-driven intelligence gathering.

According to him, the corps has continued to deploy its drones for daily surveillance, intelligence gathering and other security operations, while also providing support to sister security agencies when required.

Odimba said the command remained committed to ensuring the safety of residents and maintaining effective collaboration with other security agencies in the state.

At the inauguration of the committees, the Commandant charged members of the Senior and Junior Disciplinary Committees to discharge their responsibilities without fear or favour, stressing that disciplinary processes must be guided by fairness, objectivity, due process and respect for the rights of those involved.

He tasked the Safe School Committee with working closely with relevant stakeholders to identify security risks early and recommend preventive measures capable of creating a safe environment for teaching and learning.

Members of the Personnel Studying Approval Committee, he said, must ensure that approvals for training and further studies are based on established guidelines, organisational needs, merit and fairness.

Odimba warned all committee members against personal interests, bias, favouritism and any conduct capable of compromising the integrity of their assignments.

He urged them to maintain accurate records, observe confidentiality, submit timely reports and ensure that their recommendations remained consistent with the ethics, rules and regulations of the corps.

The Commandant described their appointments as a call to service, expressing confidence that their collective experience and commitment would contribute to more effective administration of the Abia State Command.

Speaking on behalf of the committees, the Chairman and Deputy Commandant, Operations, Ogota Emmanuel, assured residents that the committees would contribute to making Abia safer.

Also speaking, the Head of Intelligence and Investigation, J.I. Gbere, called on officers and personnel of the command to support the Commandant in his efforts to transform the corps.

Gbere, who said he would soon clock two years in Abia, described the level of development witnessed under Odimba as unprecedented, pointing particularly to the structures and computers distributed across local government divisions, departments and units.

He urged personnel to contribute their quota to the progress of the command and the state, stressing that the Commandant was “ready and ever ready to do more.”

The events underscored the command’s renewed emphasis on operational effectiveness, institutional discipline, personnel development and collaboration in strengthening security across Abia State.
