FIRST SOUTH EAST SECURITY SUMMIT IN UMUAHIA: A BOLD STEP TOWARD REGIONAL PEACE AND PROSPERITY

Yesterday, Umuahia, the Abia State capital, played host to a historic gathering —the First South-East Regional Security Summit.

Convened by the Honourable Minister of Defence on behalf of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, and hosted by Abia State government under the leadership of Governor Alex Otti,, the summit brought together all Five South East States and their Governors, federal lawmakers, security experts, traditional rulers, religious leaders, and other critical stakeholders.

The message from Umuahia was clear: the South East is taking responsibility for its own security, and we will do it together.

WHY THIS SUMMIT IS IMPORTANT

For too long, insecurity in the South East has cost us lives, businesses, investments, and a sense of normalcy. Sit-at-home orders, kidnapping, attacks on security formations, and destruction of infrastructure have slowed down the region’s economic engine.

This summit matters because it is the first time the entire leadership of the zone sat in one room with the Federal Government to agree on a coordinated response. The days of fragmented, state-by-state approaches are over.

The focus was not just on policing. The leaders agreed that lasting peace will come from:

1. Building a Strong, Modern Security Architecture – intelligence sharing, joint operations, technology, and proper equipment for our security agencies.
2. Youth Empowerment and Job Creation – because an idle youth is a ready recruit for crime. A prosperous South East is a secure South East.
3. Dialogue– including engagement with aggrieved groups to address root causes, not just symptoms.
4. Inter-State Collaboration – criminals do not respect borders. What happens in one state affects the others.
5. Proper Funding of Security Agencies – commitment from both federal and state levels to resource the men and women who protect us.

GOV. ALEX OTTI: HOSTING WITH PURPOSE AND VISION

As host Governor, Dr. Alex Otti, OFR, set the tone for the summit with leadership, clarity, and statesmanship.

He disclosed that his administration is already in close collaboration with security agencies to make Abia unconducive for criminals.Through initiatives like “Operation Crush”, establishment of the Abia State Security Advisory Council and community policing support, Abia under Governor Otti had since ensured the return of law and order as well as restoration of investor confidence.

More importantly, Governor Otti reminded everyone of a fundamental truth:
“Security is the foundation of prosperity, the pillar upon which all outlines of progress rest. Together with the welfare of the people, it is the primary purpose of government.”

He called on citizens to see security as “everyone’s business” and challenged leaders to design initiatives that will make it impossible for “merchants of anarchy” to operate freely within the zone.

Despite pockets of disturbances in a few communities, the Governor expressed optimism that “a new sense of order is returning to the region.”

Governor Alex Otti deserves commendation for being a fantastic host. From the logistics to the hospitality, to the quality of deliberations, Abia State showed that it can lead from the front. By offering Umuahia as the venue, Governor Otti has positioned Abia as a hub for regional dialogue and problem-solving.

THE STRONG CASE FOR SYNERGY AMONG SOUTH EAST LEADERS

If there is one lesson from Umuahia, it is this: “we are stronger together.”

1. Insecurity is Regional: A problem in Orlu can spill into Aba. A success in Enugu helps traders in Onitsha. We cannot secure our states in silos. Joint patrols, shared intelligence, and harmonized laws are no longer optional.
2. Our Economy is Intertwined: The Aba shoe maker, the Nnewi auto parts dealer, the Onitsha trader, and the Umuahia agro-processor all depend on safe roads and peaceful markets. When one state is unstable, the entire South East economy bleeds.
3. One Voice Gets More Attention: When the Five Governors speak with one voice to Abuja, to security agencies, and to our people, we get faster results. Division only empowers those who profit from our chaos.

Synergy must now move from rhetoric to action. It should mean regular meetings of the South East Governors’ Forum on security, a joint security trust fund, harmonized vigilante laws, and a regional database for criminals. It should mean our traditional rulers and religious leaders amplifying the message of peace in every village.

CONCLUSION

The First South East Security Summit was more than a meeting. It was a reset.

With the Federal Government present, with all five governors committed, and with stakeholders engaged, the South East has laid the foundation for a new security framework — one built on collaboration, intelligence, youth opportunity, and political will.
The Honourable Minister of Defence Major General Christopher Musa deserves commendation for convening the summit, and of course, Governor Alex Otti deserves profound applause for his exemplary hosting and for his bold leadership in making security a priority.

The work starts now. If we sustain this synergy, the South East will not only be safe again — it will become the most secure and prosperous region in Nigeria.

The era of working apart is over. The era of building together has begun.
