The Nigerian Senate has passed the bill seeking the establishment of the Federal Medical Centre (FMC) in Ikwuano, Abia State, completing the legislative process in the National Assembly and paving the way for Presidential assent.

The bill, HB 1605, sponsored by the member representing Ikwuano, Umuahia North and Umuahia South Federal Constituency, Rt. Hon. Obi Aguocha, had earlier scaled all legislative stages in the House of Representatives before receiving the concurrence of the Senate on Thursday.

With the approval of both chambers of the National Assembly, the proposed Federal Medical Centre has now moved a step closer to becoming a reality, subject to the assent of President Bola Tinubu.

The development is expected to significantly improve access to quality healthcare services in Ikwuano and neighbouring communities, while also creating employment opportunities and strengthening the region’s healthcare infrastructure.

In a statement issued by his Media Team, Rt. Hon. Aguocha described the passage of the bill as a historic milestone for the people of Ikwuano, Umuahia North and Umuahia South Federal Constituency.

According to the statement, the establishment of the Federal Medical Centre is not only aimed at expanding healthcare delivery but also represents a strategic investment in the future of the constituency through the creation of a lasting federal institution.

The statement further noted that the successful passage of the bill reflects the lawmaker’s commitment to delivering tangible legislative dividends and attracting critical federal projects capable of driving sustainable development in the constituency.

The lawmaker’s office also expressed appreciation to the leadership and members of both the Senate and the House of Representatives for their support in ensuring the successful passage of the legislation.

The proposed Federal Medical Centre, Ikwuano, is expected to provide specialized medical services, enhance healthcare delivery, facilitate medical training and research, and reduce the burden on existing federal health institutions within Abia State and the South-East region once it receives Presidential assent.

The bill now awaits the assent of President Bola Tinubu before it becomes law.
