Member representing Ikwuano/Umuahia Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, Hon. Obi Aguocha, has congratulated former Speaker of the Abia State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Chinedum Orji, on his emergence as the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate for the forthcoming National Assembly election.

Aguocha, who was also returned unopposed as the Labour Party candidate after polling 77,484 votes in the party primaries, said he is prepared to face any opponent at the polls and called for an issue-based campaign.

Speaking in an exclusive interview with Flo FM, monitored by Dailytrailnews.com, shortly after the primaries, the lawmaker said elections should focus on candidates’ records of service rather than personal attacks.

According to him, his performance since assuming office speaks for itself, noting that he has remained accessible to constituents, invested in human capital development and pursued justice and welfare initiatives across Ikwuano/Umuahia Federal Constituency.

Highlighting his legislative achievements, Aguocha disclosed that he has sponsored 26 bills and 12 motions in the House of Representatives. Among the key bills, he cited HB 127, which seeks to upgrade Michael Okpara University of Agriculture into a conventional university capable of offering a wider range of courses, including medical sciences.

He also referenced HB 1605, a bill seeking the establishment of a Federal Medical Centre in Ikwuano. The bill, he said, has already been passed by the House of Representatives and is awaiting concurrence by the Senate.

The lawmaker explained that the proposed medical centre would complement plans to transform the existing Federal Medical Centre into a teaching hospital for the university’s proposed medical sciences programme.

Aguocha further highlighted HB 2529, a bill seeking the creation of additional state constituencies in Ikwuano to improve representation in the Abia State House of Assembly, as well as HB 1659, which proposes the establishment of a Federal Institute of Mining and Geosciences in Umuahia.

On empowerment programmes, the federal lawmaker maintained that his focus remains on sustainable human capital development rather than the distribution of material items.

He revealed that his administration is currently funding 700 tertiary institution scholarships, has trained over 100 youths in Information and Communication Technology (ICT), and is constructing more than 10 homes for indigent widows across the constituency. He also noted that support for small and medium-scale enterprises and youth employment remains a key part of his empowerment agenda.

Aguocha expressed confidence that a renewed mandate would enable him to consolidate on his achievements and see many of his legislative initiatives become reality.

He also urged constituents to remain steadfast in their support for the Labour Party administration in Abia State, led by Governor Alex Otti, citing ongoing infrastructural developments across the state as evidence of the government’s commitment to progress.
