Ikwuano Mayor Sues Journalist, Seeks N3.1bn in Damages
The Chairman of Ikwuano Local Government Area of Abia State, Mr. Anthony Nwaubani, has filed a N3.1 billion defamation lawsuit against the Executive Editor of Dailyledger.com.ng, Mr. Tony Icheku, and two others over a news report alleging financial impropriety and poor leadership in the council .
The suit, filed before the High Court of Abia State, Ikwuano Division, arises from a publication titled: “Ikwuano LG Boss, Nwaubani Snobs Inquiries on Financial ii6, Poìor Leadership Allegiations” .
Dailytrail news gathered a statement of claims by Dominic Nwachukwu, legal counsel to Nwaubani, dated March 12, 2026, is demanding:
· N2 billion as claims for general damages on defamation.
· N1 billion for exemplary damages
· N120 million for litigation costs
The total demand amounts to N3.10 billion .
Reports say Nwaubani is also praying the court to grant a perpetual injunction restraining Icheku and the other defendants from further publishing defamatory statements against him. Additionally, the council chairman is demanding a retraction of the said story and a public apology .
He alleged that the words used in the publication were false and defamatory, causing damage to his reputation and standing within the community .
In a swift reaction to the suit, which was served on him on Saturday, March 14, 2026, Mr. Tony Icheku, who authored the story, declared that the online news portal stands firmly by its publication .
Icheku described the lawsuit as a welcome development, expressing confidence that the court proceedings would provide an opportunity to unveil the facts surrounding the council’s finances .
“We are praying that the court as a temple of truth, shall in the constitutional requirement of transparency and accountability, help us all unveil the fine details how this humongous amount was embezzled,” Icheku stated .
He emphasized that the online news portal has categorically confirmed that N19 million was siphoned from the coffers of Ikwuano LGA under the watch of Mr. Nwaubani as Chairman .
“As a citizen of Nigeria from Ikwuano, and a journalist, all I have asked for is for Mr. Anthony Nwaubani to be accountable to the people. But if he prefers that the Court offers him a cozy atmosphere to do so, I gladly accept to meet him in court,” Icheku added .
The controversy stems from a news report published by Dailyledger.com.ng, which alleged that the Ikwuano Council Chairman had been evading inquiries regarding financial impropriety and poor leadership in the local government administration .
The report had suggested that about N19 million was mismanaged under Nwaubani’s watch, allegations that the council chairman has vehemently denied through his legal action .
Implications for Press Freedom and Accountability
The lawsuit raises significant questions about the boundaries between defamation law and press freedom in Nigeria, particularly regarding reporting on public officials and allegations of financial misconduct .
Legal experts note that while public officials have the right to protect their reputation, journalists also have a constitutional duty to hold those in power accountable. The outcome of this case could set a precedent for how similar disputes are handled in the future .
The case, numbered HC/IL/2026, is expected to be a closely watched legal battle that will test both the strength of the evidence regarding the alleged financial impropriety and the limits of defamation claims against journalists reporting on public interest matters .
