Onuigbo hails Tinubu on activating Climate Change Act as Nigeria launches implementation framework
Member representing the Southeast Governing Board on the Northeast Development Commission NEDC Sam Onuigbo has commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for comprehensively activated the Climate Change Act through his speeches, pronouncements, and actions.
Onuigbo who said this at the launch of Nigeria’s Nationally Determined Contributions NDC Implementation Framework held in Transcorp Hilton Abuja maintained that President Tinubu’s leadership in tackling climate change and also in recognizing the opportunities that abound is worthy of recognition, commendation, and emulation.
The NEDC Chairman on Security, Climate Change and Special Interventions expressed happiness that what started on a small scale, when there was little or no awareness, is now moving in the right direction in a gradual but steady manner.
Onuigbo , the Sponsor of the Climate Change Act 2021, expressed gratitude to God that through the launch of the program, Nigeria now now has a clear pathway towards attaining Section 1 of the Climate Change Act which he said is aimed at among other things achieving low greenhouse gas (GHG) emission, inclusive green growth and sustainable economic development.
He maintained that achieving the strategic milestone is a sure path towards attaining the 2050 -2070 net – zero target as provided in the Act as he congratulated the Director-General and the leadership of the National Council on Climate Change (NCCC), the Federal Ministry of Environment, NDC Partnership, and other facilitators–local and international for the launch of the framework, describing it as a milestone achievement.
Present at the launch were the Hon. Minister for Environment Balarabe Abbas Lawal, Secretary to the Government of the Federation SGF George Akume who in their separate remarks underscored the importance of the Implementation Framework which they say is not just a document but a roadmap for transformative action which lays out the strategies, policies, and measures that will guide efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, enhance resilience, and foster sustainable development.
On her part Country Director for NDC Partnership Ms Mariana Panuncio-Feldman said with UK support, Nigeria aligned the updated NDC with its LT-LEDS and its Energy Transition Plan, to improve policy coherence and coordination, adding that with the UK support also, the government has developed the NDC Implementation Framework being launched today and is undertaking a National Stocktake on Climate Action to inform further implementation of the current NDC and the development of the next one.
