Michael Okpara Varsity holds 58th Inaugural Lecture as Nigerian First Statistics Professor Nwabueze speaks

It is important for the Nigerian government to optimally harness and utilize the benefits of statistics in data computing and analysis of the country’s needs and progress report in every sphere including governance, economy and livelihood of the average Nigerian.
These were the thoughts shared at the 58th Inaugural Lecture of the Michael Okpara University of Agriculture Umudike MOUAU by the Inaugural Lecturer; Professor Joy Nwabueze who spoke on the topic; “Statistics: A Friend of All” at the Senator Anyim Pius Anyim Auditorium MOUAU, delivered on Wednesday 9th of April 2025.
Professor Nwabueze, the First Female Professor of Statistics during the lecture reeled out empirical evidence to buttress the need for statistics to be given its prideful place in the country.
Speaking to newsmen after the event, she maintained that paying serious attention to statistics and the potentials it holds out will enable the Nigerian government in better decision-making and ensure accountability in governance area such as the quota system and the country’s electoral process.

Speaking earlier, the Vice Chancellor of the Institution, Prof. Maduebibisi Offor-Iwe commended the Inaugural Lecturer as he further elaborated the take-aways of the lecture with the summation that statistics makes data more ethical and accurate.
