Abia Government warns against illegal dredging activities in the state

The State Government has warned all those involved in illegal dredging in the state to desist from such unwholesome activities.

In a press release, the Commissioner for Environnement, Philemon Ogbonna, said government was deeply concerned about companies and individuals engaged in sand dredging without the approval of the state Government and warned all those involved in illegal dredging to desist from it or face the sanction of the government, adding that his Ministry was ready to receive requests from individuals and companies willing to engage in sand business in Abia State.

Mr. Ogbonna revealed that sand dredging carried out without prior environmental impact assessment could lead to hazards of unimaginable proportions, stressing that it would be in the best interest of everybody for businesses to be done in a responsible manner.

He called on companies and individuals involved in dredging in any part of the State to come to the Ministry of Environment, Umuahia for proper documentation and necessary permits.
