Abia First Lady Donates Furnished 3-Bedroom Apartment to Widowed Mother in Umuahia Community
The wife of the Abia State Governor, Mrs. Priscilla Chidinma Otti, has donated a fully furnished three-bedroom apartment to a widow, Mama Mercy Anosike, bringing relief and renewed hope to the beneficiary and residents of Ukome Community in Umuahia North Local Government Area.
The gesture has drawn widespread commendation from members of the community, who described the donation as a compassionate intervention that has restored dignity to the life of the widow.
Speaking during the commissioning and handover ceremony of the house, Mrs. Otti described Mama Anosike’s life story as one marked by extraordinary resilience and courage in the face of painful loss.
Represented at the event by the Commissioner for Women Affairs, Dr. Maureen Ahukwa, the Governor’s wife explained that Mama Anosike had lost her children and was left to live alone under very difficult conditions. Despite the hardship, she noted that the widow continued to remain a symbol of hope and perseverance within her community.
Mrs. Otti disclosed that when Governor Dr. Alex Otti became aware of the widow’s living conditions, he immediately directed that she be relocated from her dilapidated residence and provided with a safe and comfortable home.
She added that through the Office of the First Lady, the state government has continued to extend support to widows and other vulnerable groups across Abia State, ensuring they feel valued and cared for.
“This house represents our commitment and a practical demonstration of our efforts to empower women and support vulnerable members of society in Abia State,” she stated.
In her remarks, the Deputy Mayor of Umuahia North Local Government Area, Mrs. Chinwe Odoemelam, commended Mrs. Otti for her compassion and sustained commitment to the welfare of the less privileged.
She urged residents of the community to support the administration of Governor Alex Otti while also appealing to the state government to consider addressing some pressing needs of the community, particularly road infrastructure.
Also speaking, journalist Miss Patricia Ngborogwu, who had earlier brought attention to the plight of Mama Anosike, praised Governor Otti for responding swiftly to the situation.
According to her, the Governor’s action reflects a leadership style rooted in empathy and responsiveness to the needs of ordinary citizens.
“We are not just handing over a building today; we are celebrating the restoration of dignity, hope and belonging to a woman who has endured profound loss,” she said.
In an emotional response, the beneficiary, Mama Mercy Anosike, expressed heartfelt appreciation to the Governor and his wife, describing the gesture as a dream come true. She commended Governor Otti for promoting inclusive governance and for remembering the less privileged in society.
